Couple on porch of a winter cabin Family tubing and enjoying the snow in West Virginia
While it may be bitter cold outside, West Virginia’s fun and exciting winter activities are sure to warm even the most “frigid” of spirits.  Whether it’s romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides or hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights that bring you to the Mountain State, you won’t be disappointed.

Tubing

Remember the good ol’ days spending hours just enjoying the snow on a sled?  Well even though some of us are older now,  the fun can still be the same, or better!Adult and child tubing   Snow tubing, popular with groups and families combines the best of both worlds – the thrill of careening down snow covered mountains with the luxury of not having to make that tiresome hike back up that long steep slope.

Kids love it, adults love it and the best part – all ages can share in the excitement.  Another plus you don’t need lessons or any kind of skill whatsoever.  Banked lanes accommodate  specially designed inner tubes.  So, it’s up, down, repeat!  Up, down, repeat for hours of exhilarating fun.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides

While the whole family is sure to love West Virginia’s many holiday light displays, mom and dad realize that there’s nothing more romantic than a horse-drawn sleigh ride for two. In West Virginia, visitors have a chance to experience this wonderful wintertime activity at two of the state’s finest resorts.  At The Greenbrier, guests are treated to a breathtaking ride around the storied resort’s grounds with snow-covered mountains looming in the distance.

The Wheeling Nailers

For a night of fast-paced action and excitement, head to a Wheeling Nailers hockey game and root for the home team as they take on opponents in the East Coast Hockey League, the proving grounds for the National Hockey League.  All of the tickets are very modestly priced and you’ll feel like you are down on the ice with the players no matter where you sit in the arena.  With regular promotions and entertainment, a night Youth having fun in the snow watching the Nailers play is fun for the entire family.

Ice Skating

While you may not ice skate with as much power and determination as the Nailers, you’re still guaranteed to have a ball at West Virginia’s three ice skating rinks.  For year-round fun on the ice, the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena has both ice skating and hockey programs for visitors to enjoy.  If you would like a few lessons before hitting the ice, the Memorial Ice Arena has many programs designed to help people of all ages learn how to ice skate.  The Mountain State also has two sheltered outdoor rinks open during the colder months of the year at Canaan Valley Resort and Wheeling Park.

So remember, when the weather outside turns bitter cold, West Virginia’s winter fun is just starting to heat up.
