Downhill skiing at Winterplace Skiing in West Virginia
Being the only state entirely within the Appalachian Mountains, you can bet that West Virginia is home to great skiing.  Four premier ski resorts – Snowshoe Mountain, Canaan Valley, Winterplace, and Timberline – help provide unparalleled wintertime fun for downhill skiers, snowboarders, and snowtubing fans.  It's All Downhill

Ski jump at Snowshoe Resort.
Whether you like skiing double black-diamond slopes that seem impossibly steep or gently pitched bunny slopes, challenging alpine skiing can be found throughout West Virginia .  If you’re worried about looking like a novice, trained ski instructors can help remove some of those jitters and get you schussing down the mountain like an expert in no time.  When you just can’t get enough skiing during the daytime, all four resorts offer night skiing too.  Of course even if Mother Nature hasn’t provided the most ideal conditions for skiing, each of these resorts is able to make snow to help ensure a more reliable ski season.  Now for those skiers and snowboarders in a hurry or beginners that would prefer not to start off on a big mountain, Oglebay Resort has a newly re-opened ski slope complete with a ski lift and snow machines.

You Won't Be Board

While skiing is both thrilling and challenging, there are those that would argue that nothing beats the pure adrenaline rush of snowboarding down the side of a snow-peaked mountain.  While this extreme sport certainly takes some getting used to, it is no longer solely in the realm of daredevil teenagers and 20-somethings; older generations have embraced this sport like never before.  If you’d like to give snowboarding a try but don’t have a board of your own, you can rent everything you need right from the ski shop.  If snowboard tricks and stunts are your thing, Winterplace, Timberline, and Snowshoe Mountain have terrain parks built with challenging obstacles galore.

Surf's Up, Mountain-Style

Airboard inflatable sled at Canaan Valley Resort State Park
One of the latest, greatest trends to hit the ski industry is the Airboard inflatable sled.  Riders lie chest down, as if on a sled, and shift their weight from side to side to carve turns in the snow by steering with urethane grooves built into the bottom of the sled.  Surfing Airboarders can even come to a controlled stop.  That gives them the ability to snow-surf the same terrain as skiers and snowboarders, although some resorts have dedicated specific slopes for Airboard riders.
Canaan Valley Resort State Park. is the only ski resort in the state to
offer this activity, and one of only a few in the country to feature a separate Airboarding park.

So whether you are looking for traditional downhill thrills or the latest in snow surfing, you can find it all waiting for you on the beautiful snow-covered mountains of West Virginia .
